This is the signal I look for "The person who visibly updates, who says, “I was wrong about [x] and here is the specific mechanism of my error,” who refuses to produce the required output when it conflicts with the evidence." But I had not been able to state it so clearly until you did.
Edit: I think this is what makes the personality type you describe in "https://markatwood.substack.com/p/because-its-wrong so valuable for a team or a community: they don’t buckle to peer pressure if it contradicts the evidence of their senses and experience.
This sounds very similar to the mental condition one must cultivate at an early age while being raised by drunks/emotionally dysregulated people/delusional people and participating in the maintenance of a facade of being a healthy, functional family. One must back up the parent no matter what the parent says, no matter how that differs from what the parent said last week. One must be able to come up with post-hoc justifications for any aberrant behavior that can’t be denied. I still struggle with truthfulness because truthfulness was never taught and was sometimes punished. What rouses me to the state of anxiety typically flagged as dishonest by a lie detector is not the departure of what I’m saying from reality but the possibility of that someone might get upset or that the status quo might be destabilized. The right thing to say is whatever will keep things smoothed over. Reality? What’s that got to do with anything?
As you say, the truth has little to do with what they believe. They have had their epistemically-closed reality greatly reinforced.
So much of political social media is everyone reacting to the system as though it had a soul. It does not. In their powerless position most just yell: “Hypocrite!” But the Collective is an unblinking entity.
