The first Morrison piece was too kind. The orphaned-weapon metaphor assumed there was a weapon. There wasn’t. Morrison wrote aesthetic preference laundered as cosmology, the same mechanism every compliance apparatus runs. He didn’t defect. He upgraded to the larger version of the deal he was already running on readers. The sharpening was always yours.
I wrote a piece about Grant Morrison. It was too generous.
The piece’s central metaphor was the orphaned weapon: Morrison forged a diagnostic tool capable of naming the contemporary compliance apparatus, then defected from the project, and readers were left to pick up what the author had set down. The argument was that the backlist still cut. That the sigil was operating on readers regardless of what the author had become. That Morrison-the-forger could be distinguished from Morrison-the-defector, and that the former had produced something real.
This is wrong. I am withdrawing the metaphor.
Morrison did not forge a diagnostic tool. Morrison wrote aesthetic preference laundered as cosmology. Any diagnostic capacity the reader extracted was the reader’s own work projected onto raw material that happened to flatter it. The Compliance-god reading of Darkseid, which the first piece presented as Morrison’s diagnosis, is not Morrison’s. It is mine. I had a framework looking for objects to attach to. The Invisibles and Final Crisis were useful hooks because their aesthetic surface was congenial to the framework’s posture. The framework was not extracted from the work. The framework was imposed on it. The work was raw material, not weapon.
The correction matters because the original framing reproduced the thing it was trying to diagnose.
What the Invisibles actually contains
Start with the content audit. Who are the Invisibles?
King Mob, assassin, leather, transgressive sex. Lord Fanny, Brazilian drag queen shaman. Ragged Robin, time-traveling chaos magician. Boy, ex-cop runaway. Jack Frost, Liverpool working-class Buddha. Across the series, Morrison adds hedonist time-travelers, polyamorous magicians, fluid-gender tricksters with good cheekbones, and a rotating cast of outsider figures coded as aesthetically glamorous and sexually liberated.
Who are the Outer Church?
Suburbia. Middle management. The police. Soldiers. Fathers. Anglican propriety. Tory voters. The condition of being boring. The specific Myrmidon foot soldier of the Outer Church is the man in a suit with a job and a mortgage, face rendered featureless to indicate that he is functionally interchangeable with his workplace. The Myrmidon is the person whose preferences match the 1990s British middle-class baseline.
There is no political program distinguishing these two groups. There is no ethical principle. There is no economic analysis. There is a taste hierarchy. The Invisibles prefer drag shows to rugby, Kathmandu to Surrey, leather to wool, hallucinogens to tea, polyamory to monogamy, assassination to middle management, chaos magic to the Book of Common Prayer. The Outer Church prefers the opposite. The story is structured such that the first taste-set is cosmically correct and the second is cosmically suppressed.
The occult apparatus (sigils, larvae, Barbelith, the supercontext, the Archons) is load-bearing for a specific reason. It upgrades the taste preference into cosmic law. “I prefer drag queens to suburban dads” is a preference, and a reader who prefers the reverse has an equally valid preference. “Drag queens are the resistance to the Outer Church’s enslavement of human consciousness, and preferring suburban dads is evidence that the larvae have eaten your capacity for freedom” is not a preference. It is a metaphysical claim that forecloses disagreement. The cosmology exists to do exactly that foreclosure.
The generosity test
Consider the man who likes his job, loves his wife, votes Tory, watches rugby, finds drag shows uncomfortable, and is at ease in his life. Is this person free within the Invisibles’ framework?
He is not. He is a Myrmidon. His preferences are prima facie evidence of his capture. His contentment is what the larvae produced. The book offers no framework in which his tastes could be respected as his own. His being at ease is the diagnostic criterion for his not counting as a person.
A liberation project that extends liberation only to people whose tastes already match the author’s is not a liberation project. It is a membership certification.
A liberation project that extends liberation only to people whose tastes already match the author’s is not a liberation project. It is a membership certification.
This is the clean fact. The rest follows from it.
The move, generalized
What Morrison is doing is not unusual. It is the artist-philosopher move. Strong personal tastes get upgraded into a cosmology in which those tastes are metaphysical truth and the opposing tastes are metaphysical evil. The cosmology is sold to readers who share the tastes. The readers experience their own tastes as cosmically validated rather than as tastes. Membership in the taste-coalition becomes proof of moral or cosmic standing.
The move crosses political orientation, historical period, and respectability tier. It is not a feature of any specific ideology. It is a feature of the artist-philosopher as a type. Specimens:
Rand. Architectural modernism plus an attraction to square-jawed industrialist virility plus revulsion at collectivist mediocrity. Upgraded into Objectivism. Her tastes became the laws of human nature.
Nietzsche. Aristocratic contempt for herd morality, attraction to warrior vitality, revulsion at Christian pity, temperamental preference for Mediterranean over Northern European character. Upgraded into will-to-power cosmology. His aesthetic became the structure of moral reality.
Tolkien. Pastoral pre-industrial English aesthetic, Catholic traditionalist sensibility, revulsion at factories and concrete. Upgraded into Middle-earth’s metaphysics of fallen modernity. Pipe-smoking cottage life versus industrialized corruption elevated to cosmic struggle.
Lovecraft. Racial and sexual disgust laundered into cosmic indifferentist horror cosmology; his revulsion at immigration and miscegenation became the shape of the universe’s hostility to humanity.
Heidegger. Peasant-rootedness aesthetic, Black Forest hut sensibility, revulsion at cosmopolitan urban modernity. Upgraded into Being-toward-death and the cosmology of authentic dwelling. The aesthetic preceded the politics; the Nazi affiliation followed the aesthetic logic.
Wagner. Anti-Semitic aesthetics plus Germanic mythological grandiosity. Upgraded into the Gesamtkunstwerk as redemptive national-spiritual project.
D. H. Lawrence. Sexual-vitalist aesthetic, revulsion at industrial modernity and bourgeois propriety. Upgraded into the metaphysics of blood-consciousness and instinctual truth.
Rousseau. Pastoral noble-savage aesthetic, temperamental preference for sentiment over reason, personal history of feeling wronged by Parisian intellectuals. Upgraded into a theory of human nature in which civilization is corruption and natural virtue is the baseline.
Morrison. 1990s counter-cultural aesthetic, revulsion at suburban British normalcy, attraction to glamorous transgression. Upgraded into the Invisibles’ cosmology.
Look at the partisan coding of that list. Rand, right. Nietzsche, contested. Tolkien, pastoral-conservative. Lovecraft, explicitly racist. Heidegger, Nazi-affiliated and at the academic apex. Wagner, nineteenth-century nationalist. Lawrence, idiosyncratic-modernist. Rousseau, proto-leftist-Enlightenment. Morrison, left-counter-cultural.
The move is orthogonal to political content. Any reader who wants to categorize this piece as partisan has to explain which partisan side Rand plus Tolkien plus Rousseau plus Morrison are collectively on, and the answer is: none. The move belongs to the artist-philosopher as a type. The political flag varies with where and when the artist is standing. The recruitment technology is the same.
The personality that makes this move and the personality that staffs compliance apparatuses are the same personality. The trait-cluster identified in the previous piece (high conscientiousness, high in-group agreeableness, high disgust sensitivity toward defection) is the temperament that experiences taste-violation as moral crime. The artist-philosopher laundering taste into cosmology and the DEI trainer laundering preference into ethics are running on the same substrate. The difference is institutional position, not temperament.
The mapping
Current institutional language runs the same move with different tastes.
DEI training does not say “adopt our preferences about how to discuss identity.” It says “our preferences about how to discuss identity are ethical truth, and your resistance is complicity in harm.” Aesthetic preference laundered into ethical cosmology. Resistance rendered as metaphysical crime.
The sensitivity reader does not say “I prefer this phrasing.” The sensitivity reader says “this phrasing causes harm.” Taste upgraded into safety.
Trust and Safety does not say “this offends me.” Trust and Safety says “this is unsafe.” Personal affective response laundered into objective threat.
Land acknowledgments, pronouns-in-bio, the specific affective register of contemporary progressive speech (the hesitations, the care-language, the therapeutic framing, “lived experience” as epistemic trump): the surface content differs from Morrison’s Brazilian-shaman-drag-queen aesthetic profile, but the mechanism is identical. A set of preferences is being laundered into a framework in which sharing the preferences certifies the reader as moral and dissenting from them certifies the reader as complicit in harm.
The Outer Church Morrison was fighting in 1995 was itself the worn-down compliance apparatus of an earlier coalition: midcentury Anglican middle-class propriety, formerly the taste-coalition that had staffed its own apparatus, now in institutional decline and aesthetically exhausted. Morrison’s counter-cultural coalition recruited against it, won cultural dominance over the next twenty years, and became the current compliance apparatus. The cycle is legible in retrospect. Morrison could not see it because he was inside it in both generations.
Morrison did not defect
Here is the retraction proper.
The first piece treated Morrison’s accommodation with the current progressive coalition as a betrayal of something he had previously built. This framing is not available to the darker reading.
Morrison did not defect. Morrison upgraded.
The current compliance apparatus was not offering Morrison a deal opposite to the one the Invisibles had offered readers. The current compliance apparatus was offering Morrison the same deal the Invisibles had offered readers, but at scale. Larger coalition. Better institutional certification. More readers available to be flattered into feeling cosmically correct for holding the coalition’s preferences. Same psychological transaction. Better terms.
Morrison could not see the deal as a deal because the deal was Morrison’s native mode of thought. He had written the Invisibles from inside the mechanism that the current coalition is scaling, and he had no vantage from which to recognize the scaled version as continuous with his own work. When the coalition arrived and offered him membership plus certification plus cosmic correctness, he accepted, because from the inside it did not look like a new offer. It looked like his own work finally being understood.
This is not hypocrisy. Hypocrisy requires the hypocrite to be aware of the gap. There is no gap. The first piece’s Auden parallel was too flattering. Auden at least had two distinct phases. Morrison has one. The coalition he is in now and the coalition the Invisibles was recruiting for are the same coalition at different densities.
The weapon was never there
The first piece’s key move was the distinction between the author and the work: Morrison defected, the work still cuts. The distinction collapses under the darker reading. The work does not cut. The reader cuts, using material that happens to have edges because the reader brought the sharpening.
Final Crisis does not diagnose the compliance apparatus. Final Crisis is an aesthetic object in which good-guy superheroes coded as Morrison’s taste-peers defeat a bad-guy compliance system coded as Morrison’s taste-revulsions. The compliance diagnosis is what a reader with a compliance-apparatus framework extracts from the aesthetic object. The framework supplies the diagnosis. The object supplies flattering raw material for the diagnosis to attach to.
This is the normal relationship between readers and texts. Readers with frameworks find frameworks confirmed in texts. The error in the first piece was treating the reader’s diagnostic extraction as the author’s achievement. Morrison’s achievement was writing flattering raw material. The diagnostic tool was the reader’s capacity.
Moore is structurally different not because Moore is more intelligent than Morrison. Moore is structurally different because Moore writes inside perspectives he personally dislikes and lets them be coherent. Watchmen’s moral center is Rorschach, whose politics Moore opposes. From Hell’s protagonist is a Freemason ritual murderer whose cosmology the book’s structure half-endorses. Moore’s work refuses to launder Moore’s own tastes into cosmology. This means the work does not flatter the reader’s tastes and therefore does not recruit. Which also means the work does not produce the “I am cosmically correct” sensation that Morrison’s work produces in aligned readers. Moore’s work is harder to read, less gratifying, and structurally immune to the capture mechanism. These are the same fact.
The self-implication
The essay you are currently reading runs the same move.
I prefer dissident individualism to coalition membership. I experience compliance apparatuses as suffocating. I have constructed a framework in which this preference reads as diagnostic rightness. I am recruiting readers who share the preference into experiencing the shared preference as cosmically correct. Readers who prefer coalition membership to dissident individualism will find this essay hostile and, by its own logic, will be cast as capture-cases. Readers who share my preferences will find the essay gratifying and will experience the gratification as confirmation.
The framework might be correct. That is not the point. The point is that the sensation of its being correct is being manufactured through the same channel Morrison used, that Rand used, that Heidegger used, that every artist-philosopher in the specimen list used, and that the contemporary compliance apparatus uses. Agreement is being produced via aesthetic flattery rather than via evidence.
I cannot exit the mechanism by writing this essay. I can only operate inside it with the lights on. The difference between this and Morrison’s work is not that I am outside the recruitment structure. The difference is that I am marking the recruitment structure in the same piece that deploys it, which costs me the ability to experience my own framework as cosmically certified, and which offers the reader an escape hatch that Morrison’s work structurally refuses.
That is the whole methodological difference. It is smaller than it sounds and larger than it looks.
The affordance
There is no program here. No coalition to join. No Moore-as-model prescription (the prescription would run the move again). The affordance is one reflex, and it is small.
Notice when your tastes are being flattered. Treat flattery as diagnostic of capture risk, not of alignment with truth.
When a framework, a coalition, a writer, a Substack, a therapist, a political movement, a boss, or a prophet tells you that your existing tastes are cosmically right, the sensation of validation is the capture mechanism operating. The sensation does not tell you the framework is wrong. It tells you that agreement is being manufactured through a route that does not pass through evidence. The framework might still be correct. Check it against things you do not want to hear.
Apply this to the current essay. If this piece flatters your skepticism of progressive institutions, the flattery is the warning sign. Check the argument against evidence you would prefer it not face. The places where the framework is most likely to be wrong are the places the flattery discourages you from looking. I am the first target of the reflex I am handing you. The reflex is not a loyalty oath. It works against me as much as against anyone else.
The reflex is livable because it is small and because it does not recruit. It does not construct a new coalition to replace the ones it dismantles. It is a reflex, not a program.
That is the whole thing.
The correction, flat
Morrison was not a writer who produced diagnostic tools and later defected from them. Morrison was a writer who ran a recruitment mechanism for a losing coalition, aged into the winning version of the same mechanism, and experienced the transition as continuity because from the inside the mechanism does not feel like a mechanism. It feels like being correct.
The first piece treated the backlist as an orphaned weapon. There is no weapon. There is raw material that flatters readers with compatible frameworks, and there are readers who brought their own capacity to it.
Morrison wrote a stick.
The sharpening was yours.
That is the only thing the first piece got right, and it got it right by accident.

Also while I do agree with you that there are features which are endemic to human nature, not a political side (rather the political sides ends up displaying these natures in manners which make the sides), I would dispute Tolkien as...

Expressly because of his' works distinction from the others. Tolkien's tastes are expressly NOT turned into a cosmology. The ending of LOTR is not the entire rest of the world becoming like the Shire (his clear favorite and preference), it's expressly the Shire being allowed to remain itself.
Except it isn't either. The coda "Scouring of the Shire" also makes it clear that even the Shire cannot escape the consequences of the war - even it ends up becoming scarred by the conflict. But otherwise there is no indication in Middle-Earth that violations of Tolkien's taste is a moral crime. The Elves, Dwarves, Gondor and Rohan are all allowed to be "like themselves" and each do things their own ways after the War of the Ring, they do not all become like the Shire. (Rohan still keeps its horses. Gondor has its King and Queen, etc)
It certainly doesn't elevate them to moral crimes the way Rand or Morrison will elevate violations of their tastes in their works. (At least Rand had some excuses given some of the abuse and trauma she suffered.)
You would have a FAR stronger case that CS Lewis elevated taste to moral cosmology, especially on a shallow reading of the Space Trilogy or Narnia. I would disagree still, but would grant that it is a far stronger case with him.

Thank you! This has been my impression of Morrison for awhile (and I say this as someone who credits his JLA run with getting me into comics), and it's becoming an issue with more writers I fear.
