Great points! I think historically, guilt and redemption were heavily entwined with religion: that was the framework for understanding sin and finding forgiveness for it. Everything is kind of a clunky and less forgiving mess now because the Enlightenment chased our grandest moral evils into secular politics (Hitler, Slavery, climate denial etc), and secular politics has no forgiveness mechanism.
