A century of political theory, psychology, sociology, and STEM critique built on a model of human nature that was wrong, suppressed the evidence that it was wrong, and blamed the resulting failures on sabotage. The fertility collapse is the crop failure.
The previous post in this series (”We Need This By Q3”) documented a pattern: the progressive liberation project specified hard technical dependencies, treated them as engineering deliverables, and when the technology didn’t arrive, reframed the non-delivery as political hostility from a captured STEM establishment. Firestone as product manager. The convivial tools arrived and people used them for TikTok.
That pattern is one instance of something larger, and the larger thing has a name. We just aren’t supposed to use it.
Western political theory, psychology, sociology, and STEM critique from roughly 1920 to 2020 is Lysenkoism. Not analogous to Lysenkoism. Not “like” Lysenkoism. Structurally identical to Lysenkoism, and for the same reason: a political program that required a specific model of nature built institutional machinery to suppress evidence that the model was wrong, attributed the resulting policy failures to sabotage by enemies, and kept running until the crop failure was undeniable.
The crop failure is demographic rather than agricultural. The mechanism is the same.
The architecture
Trokhym Lysenko rejected Mendelian genetics because Marxist-Leninist ideology required that organisms be reshapable through environmental intervention. If inheritance is genetic, then the revolutionary project of reshaping humanity through changed material conditions has a ceiling. That ceiling was politically unacceptable. So Lysenko declared the ceiling didn’t exist, the Soviet state enforced the declaration, and Nikolai Vavilov (the geneticist who was right about, well, everything) died in prison in 1943.
The important thing about Lysenko is not that he was wrong. Scientists are wrong constantly. The important thing is the mechanism by which the wrong answer was maintained. Five steps:
The political program specifies what human nature must be. Science is arranged to confirm the specification. Contradicting findings are suppressed through institutional means (career destruction, funding denial, imprisonment) rather than epistemological means (replication, counter-evidence, argument). Policy outputs fail because they’re built on a wrong model of the organism. The failures are attributed to sabotage by enemies rather than to the model being wrong.
Lysenko blamed “bourgeois geneticists.” The crops still died.
All five steps map onto the Western case. The political program (liberation, equality of outcome, social constructionism) specifies that human nature is blank-slate: malleable, environmentally determined, infinitely reshapable through institutional intervention. The specification is not a finding. It is a requirement. Everything that follows is maintenance of the requirement.
The first commitment
Franz Boas and his students at Columbia built cultural determinism as an institutional commitment in the 1920s. This is the point where intellectual honesty requires a structural observation rather than a concession paragraph: Boas was responding to genuine scientific racism. The political uses of biological determinism in the early twentieth century were catastrophic. Boas had reason to push back.
But pushing back on bad science by installing an institutional commitment to the opposite conclusion is not science. It is counter-Lysenkoism. Margaret Mead’s Coming of Age in Samoa (1928) was the flagship output: Samoan adolescence was free of the stress and sexual anxiety that characterized American adolescence, proving that these traits were cultural artifacts rather than biological inevitabilities. Derek Freeman later demonstrated that the data was fabricated. It didn’t matter. The conclusion was institutionally necessary. It had departments, journals, hiring pipelines, and fifty years of graduate students who owed their careers to it.
John Watson’s behaviorism ran the same move in psychology, stated with refreshing bluntness: “Give me a dozen healthy infants, well-formed, and my own specified world to bring them up in and I’ll guarantee to take any one at random and train him to become any type of specialist I might select.” Not a finding. A manifesto. The blank-slate premise installed as a research program and enforced through departmental hiring for half a century.
The Frankfurt School arrived from Europe and added a diagnostic layer. Adorno’s The Authoritarian Personality (1950) pathologized “anti liberation” personality traits as psychological damage: rigidity, conventionalism, submission to authority weren’t dispositions with genetic loading. They were symptoms. If your personality contradicts the theory, you’re sick. Lysenkoism pointed at the individual.
The institutional buildout
The 1960s and 1970s built the infrastructure. Women’s studies departments. Ethnic studies programs. Interdisciplinary programs organized around the constructionist premise as a foundational commitment rather than a testable hypothesis. The Coleman Report (1966) was supposed to justify massive educational intervention by documenting the damage of unequal school resources. Instead it found that school quality explained little variance in educational outcomes compared to family background. The report was buried. More interventions were funded. The model required that environment be dispositive, so evidence that environment had a low ceiling was not useful evidence.
Behavioral genetics started producing heritability estimates for IQ, personality, and psychopathology in the 1970s and 1980s. Arthur Jensen published on the heritability of IQ in 1969. Hans Eysenck published on the biological basis of personality. Robert Plomin’s twin studies kept replicating the same finding: genetic variance explains more than environmental variance for most measured psychological traits.
None of them were refuted. Jensen was protested, physically threatened, required a bodyguard. Eysenck was physically attacked during a lecture. Plomin learned to frame his findings very, very carefully. Napoleon Chagnon documented that violence had reproductive payoffs among the Yanomamö and was functionally expelled from anthropology. Not because his data was wrong. Because his data was politically intolerable.
Step three of the architecture: contradicting findings suppressed through institutional means rather than epistemological means. Career destruction rather than counter-evidence. Social sanction rather than replication failure. The mechanism is lower-intensity than the Soviet version. Nobody went to prison. Vavilov died in a cell; Chagnon merely had his career destroyed and his reputation savaged for decades. Lower cost per incident. But scalable across a century, across every university department, across every hiring committee and tenure review and grant panel and journal editorial board. The dosage differs. The pharmacology is identical.
Larry Summers suggested in 2005 that variance in mathematical aptitude might partially explain the underrepresentation of women in STEM faculty positions. He was president of Harvard. He stated a hypothesis consistent with the data. He resigned. James Damore wrote an internal memo at Google in 2017 citing mainstream personality psychology on sex differences. He was fired. Neither was refuted. Both were punished. If you can’t tell the difference between “this claim is false” and “this claim is socially unacceptable,” you are inside a Lysenkoist system, and the system is working as designed.
The epistemological firewall
Lysenkoism has a vulnerability: reality keeps producing data. Crops die. Heritability estimates replicate. The Scandinavian paradox keeps showing up (the more gender-equal the society, the larger the sex differences in occupational choice, which is the opposite of what the constructionist model predicts). Prenatal androgen exposure keeps correlating with sex-typed behavior. Vervet monkeys keep showing sex-typed toy preferences, and vervets are not exposed to the patriarchy.
The Soviet version handled this by suppressing the data directly: destroy the geneticists, burn the journals, control the research institutions. Blunt instrument. Effective until the crops died in quantities that couldn’t be papered over.
The Western version built something more sophisticated. If the problem is that science keeps producing contradicting evidence, the elegant solution is not to suppress individual findings (whack-a-mole, expensive, draws attention) but to discredit the epistemological framework that produces them.
Sandra Harding’s The Science Question in Feminism (1986) arrived at the precise moment it was needed. Firestone’s book was sixteen years old, no artificial wombs. Behavioral genetics was producing heritability estimates that couldn’t be replicated away. Harding’s move: science isn’t delivering liberatory results because scientific objectivity itself is a social construction, structured by the interests of the dominant group. The “rape manual” comment about Newtonian mechanics (Harding asked whether Newton’s Principia should be read as a rape manual) is the tell. If the hardest of hard sciences can be reframed as an expression of patriarchal domination, no empirical finding from any field is safe from political reinterpretation.
Haraway’s Cyborg Manifesto (1985). Jasanoff’s co-production framework. Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble (1990), which cannot account for congenital adrenal hyperplasia data (girls with CAH exposed to elevated prenatal androgens show masculinized play behavior and occupational interests regardless of socialization) and does not try.
This is not only critique of individual findings. This is a Lysenkoist move applied to epistemology itself. If objectivity is a myth, if scientific knowledge is always already shaped by social interests, then no amount of data from any discipline can be dispositive against the constructionist premise. You have immunized the theory against all possible future disconfirmation from all possible sources.
Lysenko suppressed genetics. The STS tradition suppressed the epistemological framework that makes genetics (or any empirical science) authoritative. Same function. Higher level of abstraction. Much harder to dismantle, because you can’t point to dead crops. You can only point to the mounting pile of replicated findings that nobody in the policy apparatus is willing to act on.
Status report
The sciences are cracking. Behavioral genetics is mainstream. The replication crisis forced acknowledgment that large portions of social psychology were, to use the technical term, wrong. Genome-wide association studies produce results weekly that would have ended careers twenty years ago. The wall built by Harding and Haraway and Jasanoff is being undermined from beneath by the sheer accumulation of replicated data.
The humanities and the policy apparatus have not cracked. Hiring practices. Medical school admissions criteria. Education policy. DEI infrastructure (now being dismantled politically rather than epistemologically, which means the underlying Lysenkoism survives to be reinstalled later). The gap between what the sciences now know and what the policy infrastructure is built on grows wider every year.
Steven Pinker’s The Blank Slate (2002) catalogued the errors. He was polite about it. He documented the suppression and the institutional capture and the career destructions and called it a “fear” of human nature. It wasn’t fear. It was enforcement. Pinker described the symptoms. The diagnosis is Lysenkoism. He was too polite to say it.
I’m not.
